MK ACT celebrates their refuge’s 40th year in Milton Keynes

Last week the Mayor, Councillor Steve Coventry was among the 50 people to help celebrate 40 years since the first domestic abuse refuge in Milton Keynes opened. The Mayor highly commended MK ACT for the tailored support they had given to their clients, supporting them in an environment where they felt safe and empowered. He also urged people to help MK ACT’s current appeal of £40 for Change that Lasts.

Within the last year MK ACT has supported 808 people in Milton Keynes and 705 children.

He also urged people to help MK ACT’s current appeal of £40 for Change that Lasts. A £40 donation to Mk ACT can make a huge difference.

Sue Burke, CEO of MK ACT said:

“We are using this year to celebrate what we have achieved but also what we still have to achieve to make a difference to those we support and their families. Unfortunately, in common with other voluntary and third sector organisations, we are facing a challenging environment characterised by closure and funding reductions for many sister organisations across the UK which threatens our national network of provision of vital domestic violence and abuse services. We in Milton Keynes are indeed fortunate that our local Council have continued to support our services in the city, for those in abusive and often life threatening relationships.”

Ex residents also spoke at the celebration, one lady spoke of her time at the refuge and said “When I was in the refuge I did the Freedom Programme. This programme has helped me massively. I now understand what a healthy relationship is. I’m so thankful to MK ACT for all the help and support”.

This year MK ACT are raising money for their Last Resort Fund. This fund allows them to help families who are destitute and allows them to be able to react quickly and helps get people who are suffering from domestic violence to safety as quickly as possible.  Anyone wishing to support MK ACT should email [email protected] or visit www.mk-act.org
